Preparation and coking properties of binder pitch prepared by oxidation and mild-polymerization two step method

  • Binder pitch is one of the important raw materials for artificial carbon/graphite electrodes, and the preparation of high-quality binder pitch is of great significance. Four kinds of refined pitches which prepared by high-temperature coal tar pitch with different sources were used as raw materials to produce binder pitches by oxidation and mild-polymerization two step methods. And the coking properties of the binder pitch were also studied in detail. The basic physic-chemical properties of binder pitch were studied by proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, FT-IR, optical microscope and thermogravimetric analyzer, respectively. Well, optical microscope, XRD, Raman spectrum, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and micro-strength were also used to determine micro-structure of binder pitch coke. The results shows that, the binder pitches with optically isotropic, high aromatic and good thermal stability were prepared by four types of refined high-temperature coal tar pitch through a two-step process of oxidation and mild-polymerization method. The optical micro-structure of binder pitch cokes obtained by thermal conversion and carbonization method were mainly composed of leaflet structure and had a relatively high content of regular carbon microcrystals. Among them, the content of β resin in binder pitch BP-KL was as high as 35.27%, and the optical anisotropy index of the binder pitch coke was as high as 93%.
